before you say i am being pedantic let me explain u a thing
I can get why people were so upset about Merida’s changes for her induction, sure. I don’t agree, but I get it. The things I heard the most complaints about were:
- she’s covered in glitter
- her hair’s not as wild
- she doesn’t have her bow
- she was made skinnier
- she’s…sultry-looking…i gss
and while those are totally valid complaints, they are only being applied to Merida, when every single princess in that lineup has gone through the exact same steps.
They all rolled around in the crafts box, they’ve all had their appearances changed to be more ‘modern and attractive,’ they’ve all been primped and pushed into a set ~pretty~ look.
Our few WoC princesses are either not included in much of the promotional material, or whitewashed. Where’s all the petitions and angry blog posts about that?
Anyway; I bring this up simply because there are already existing ladies in the Disney pantheon that never got that coronation, even though they totally deserved it. Princesses or not (and apparently they don’t have to be, seeing as a good deal of the lineup aren’t actually princesses or only became as such after marrying the prince), they’ve been around for ages and hardly get any attention.
SO WE’LL START WITH KIDA. You might recognise Kidagakash Nidakh from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Released in 2001, many of us are quite fond of this movie—but unfortunately it was met with mixed reviews and did poorly at the box office, so Disney has done their best to quietly sweep its existence under the rug.
Kida is an actual princess—queen, by the end of her movie—but her queenly attire is…mneh? I included it in the first spot, and smacked it with glitter as per Disney’s new Thing, but did a couple of other designs to explore possibilities. Also I started this at 1 in the morning so it’s probably awful
What other neglected Disney ladies would you like me to try? Or if there’s a redesign for a lady you’d like to see, Dis or otherwise, let me know.
